How is everyone? We are doing pretty good.
I have taken on what feels like a Herculean Task this semester.
As you might know, I am working on my Masters in English degree at WKU in Kentucky.
This semester I became a full fledged Grad student by taking the GRE and passing the English and the writing.

The semester started in August and I took only one class, because that is all I can afford - thanks Progressive for this semester... (You can call me on that one... lol)

I go to my first class and get a phone call the next day offering me the Graduate Assistant spot that had opened up. As I had JUST begged all my teacher friends to write recommendation letters so that I could become a Graduate Assistant. You know, those annoying graduate level students who teach the 100 level English classes or are teaching the labs for your 150 student math class. Yup, me.

Well, I'm several weeks in now and I must be crazy. I really only need to survive this semester and next semester and then I am free to relax again.
I'm teaching three FULL 90/91 classes at Sky. (Asked not to do that next semester.)
AND I'm now taking 3 classes - as that is part of the Grad Assistant deal - AND I have to work in the writing lab at school.

I am sorry to share to all my friends that I no longer work at the mall (good thing I got out when I did.)
Soooo, I no longer have that fabulous discount. Boooo.

Life is hard and Tom is not thrilled with my hours or crankiness. I often have the urge to say, "I'm too old for this shit."

Anyway - we are surviving and Kayaking is very much on the back burner for the next 9 months. I think we may survive.......

But, Friday night we saw a play. I was soooo happy - Shakespeare is my main man.
Western Kentucky University presented - "Much Ado about Nothing."

"Much Ado about Nothing" is such a funny play, I still love "12th Night" but "Much ado" has some good stuff.

The student actors did a good job. It was Friday and probably their first real night. They did not have the awareness to slow down a little and breathe while the audience is laughing. More than a few lines were lost in the laughter. Also the beginning was a little fast, so the first set of snipes out of the main characters were lost.
The poor guy playing the town sheriff had the attitude, but not the line delivery. Some of the words were not as clear, so the audience could not tell that he was using the wrong words in a very wrong way - which is why he is supposed to be so funny.

If I had not seen the movie several times, I do believe I could have been as lost as some other ladies at intermission. It took Tom about 15 minutes to catch up to what in the world is going on.
It is hard for the actors to remember, most people have never read the play and need you the actor to get all of it across.
I'm sure the rest of their shows could only get better. They did a great job.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044870713835293900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7409528.post-81581022442455444132016-01-13T13:04:00.003-06:002016-01-13T13:04:40.796-06:002016 New Year

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Happy New Year

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> We survived the annual trip to Michigan. We stayed 2 whole weeks and tried to see as many people as possible. Weather grounded us for one day, but overall it was a successful visit. Thank you soooo much to everyone who invited us to their homes to hang out and play games. It was also really great to eat dinners with so many people. Too often our trips to places includes us spending tons of money on eating out. We went out about 3 or 4 times and those were nice too. Boston Market was one place we had to hit. I can not believe how much we miss that franchise down here. KFC doesn't do it for me as well.

I finally spent a little time to add up how many miles I kayaked in 2015. I thought I had done a few more, but no - it was only 357 miles. 100 of that was on the Paddle Georgia trip in June. We did that 100 miles over the course of 7 days. Tom and I are going back this year (if we get in) and plan to take Uncle T with us too.

I finally figured out how their Canoe-a-thon fundraiser works. I ask all of you for money and if I hit a certain amount - NEXT YEAR 2017 - I will get a special code that makes it possible for me to get on the trip automatically and I do not have to worry about fighting everyone else for a spot. I am NOT asking for anyone to pay my WAY on this trip. We only wish to give the group some money - as they do an AMAZING job and they support education and stewardship of the lakes and rivers in the State of Georgia. They have worked hard to help clean up a few bad spots that industry had made a mess of on the rivers. They have also done some major work to create good maps and books about the rivers in Georgia and all the places people can paddle.
So, PLEASE - donate a few dollars- Like I'm selling you candy - because this is very much candy to me. It's all online and easy to do.
http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/TammyFrederick/paddle-georgia-canoeathon-2016

Plans for 2016 -

That is a really good question. Tom has his job and things are going well. It looks like we will be here a few more years and I am happy about that. I still love working at the community college. This is my 8th semester teaching here. Things are going to change some over the next year, so I had to decide what I was going to do. It looks like I am going back to get a 2nd Masters Degree. This time in English. I have a ton of stuff to do before I'm completely in the program, but that all should start in the fall. I'm scheduled for a class that starts later this month. Hopefully that goes well.

We haven't made vacation plans - except for Paddle Georgia, Basically because our tenants are moving out at the end of January and we really need the house to sell quickly. We are hoping that it will sell once they move out. Hopefully we will not have to do a bunch of work to make it look decent. And Hopefully they will not leave it a mess.
Please let there not be a TON of snow in February this year. I'm sure we will have to make more than one trip back up to Michigan. Let's not make that be our epic snow journey.

Star Wars.........

Have you seen it?? Are you going to??? Do you even care??
It was great. I'd love to go on about it - but several other people do a really great job. One guy tore apart a stupid click bait article on it. That was a fun read.
It is enjoyable. :~)

Have a great day.
How did that happen??

You are probably wondering how I am doing in my Master's level English class, and the answer is - maybe surviving. My annotated Bib is due on Thursday and I feel like I have about half of it done. I have tonight and tomorrow to wrap all that up. I might just survive.
Then I need to actually write the paper. AHHHHHHHH

October was pretty cool here. I missed out on a couple great Kayak trips, but we had FRIENDS from Michigan actually VISIT us and stay the night.
It was awesome, 3 weekends in a row people came to Kentucky for one reason or another and we managed to see all of them.

We drove a little over an hour to catch people heading farther west and had lunch. Then we had A and T stop by on their Drive back from Texas. It was fabulous to have people we haven't seen in 2 years come visit. :~)

Tom cooked a ton and we played games and just hung out. I forgot what it was like to get my butt whipped by someone other than Tom in a game.

Then B and H came to visit for the weekend with the Dogs. I can't decide if Brando enjoys the visits or just tolerates the girl dogs. That was an insane weekend because we had stuff to do and so did our friends, but we managed to have breakfast and play games a couple times. WE did acquire one of the games, so next time we are gonna whip your butts.

I almost forgot that some other people came to see us in August. They were driving back from Tennessee and decided to visit. That was GREAT. Of course, Tom made a ton of food and we went to Lost River Cave in town.
My favorite place to show people the weirdness that is living in karst country, it explains why none of us have basements. Unless you count one made by building your house on a hill, that's not a basement, that is just a walk out.

If you dig for a basement, you might have to jackhammer out some rock, or go a little too far and get a basement that is anywhere from a 400 square foot bat cave, or something that runs on and on for miles.

I just realized that Bruce Wayne must live somewhere in Kentucky or maybe the Virginia's. I don't think too many other states have so many cave possibilities. Certainly not Chicago, Detroit, or New York - that would just be all underwater.
Hmm, where is Gotham anyway??

Well, I'm off to work on my paper. I'll try for pictures next time.
Christmas will be here in a minute.

We should be home for about 2 weeks. Try to squeeze us in your schedule. I don't know if Karaoke will happen while I'm there but I sincerely hope so.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044870713835293900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7409528.post-76577422165441496602015-10-19T20:05:00.000-05:002015-10-19T20:05:03.409-05:00Graduate English Class<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">How long have you known me? Think about that for a second.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I just need to tell you now at the MIDDLE of this semester that I may be in over my head. I signed up for my first Master's level English class in August. I was a little wigged out about finding one to take, that I probably wasn't nearly as picky as I should have been.... Or more likely, the class I really wanted was scheduled at the same time as the ONE class I teach at night for the community college.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I am pretty sure I have done what is expected of me up to this point. Finish reading the books we have been given, for the date we are discussing them. Along with answering all the questions she has given us about the books. Along with trying to discern anything -ISM about the book that I could recognize on my own.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">That last thing - not doing as well with it.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">What do I mean by -ISM? If you have taken any lit classes, you might have run across that term. It is supposed to make you think about what categories you could place the book in- romanticism, socialism, Feminism, Deconstructionism, and any other -ism you could imagine. This is something I DO NOT DO while reading books. I missed out on this particular type of class in Undergrad or during my teacher instruction classes.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I totally see why I missed out on these types of classes. Actually, come to think of it, I do believe I took one Literature class and NOW I understand why the teacher hated my paper. I could not figure out what in the world she wanted from me. Now, I think I know from just 6 weeks in an actual ENGLISH Literature class.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Anyway, Next week I'm to give a presentation on the next book we are to have read for class. I am supposed to point out the -isms found in the book. I am also supposed to compare the book to the one we just recently read before hand. I am also supposed to make a worksheet to hand out to class. JOY. Tomorrow, I must dive in deep to do this work. I have at least managed to read the whole story, so now I can read stuff about the story in order to make some ideas and meanings come out of the craziness of ENGLISH Lit.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Do you know any English Literature PHd holders? I have gotten to know my first and I can sincerely tell you that I had no idea. She specializes in a couple authors from a very specific time period and WOW, the amount of background work she has done on them is absolutely amazing. Traveling to other countries to spend several months over several years to do research is pretty darn amazing.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I am just glad to see that she is a pretty good teacher to go along with all that research and dedication to what she knows. When someone tells you that you should probably go find the original thing and check that out, there are really compelling reasons for that.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">It's too late for me, but I will try to get to know the people I meet who have done it.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Sorry, no pictures today. Maybe I'll post stuff I learn about the book I'm doing next week.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Just thought you might like to know what strange and amazing thing I'd gotten myself into this year......... Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044870713835293900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7409528.post-76713890850731045152015-08-05T11:01:00.000-05:002015-08-05T11:01:28.806-05:00Ricoh WG-M1 - YouTubeHow often is your life in Limbo? Waiting for someone else to tell you something? I feel like I have been floating in that place for a couple weeks now. Actually, it has been most of the summer. I did not stop planning the rest of my life, but today I am totally WAITING...

Tom got me a new action camera for my birthday. I am enjoying it.
It is a Ricoh WG-M1.

Everyone would ask me- why not a Go-Pro? I am just a little too controlling to do that. First you pay $300+ for the camera with no screen, then you have to buy the waterproof housing and all the special adapters to attach it to things. Yes, they did that all on purpose - to sell more stuff.

The Ricoh is based on regular cameras with the abilities of a Go-Pro. I put a regular quick release on the bottom and waaaa-laaa, it goes right on the rig I already made for the Kayak.
So far, I am rather pleased. It took me a while to figure out some of the things it does and see which view I liked better. It has Wide/Mid/Narrow lens setting and NO Zoom, but no action camera has a zoom.
Here are some shots in each style taken at 14 megapixels. If you want to see YouTube videos from it - Go here...
Make sure to subscribe to see the new stuff.
(Click to embiggen- stolen from The Bloggess)
The first shot here was taken using the Narrow setting on the pictures. I'm pretty sure that is what I had set on these. This is from a trip down Green River, this is a creek that we can't normally go down. The water was high, so we could get through. There is a Tiny bit of distortion on the edges and corners.

The second picture here is from Barren River Lake. This one was done set on Mid - so there is a little rounding on the edges. Oh, I have a picture on Facebook you can see the trees sort of leaning in.

This picture is from Drakes Creek and that day everything should be on Wide, because I kept having to turn the camera back on over and over again. Anyway, you can really see that this is the Wide, you can see the black edges of the lens cover (to make it waterproof). So, the center of the picture is clear, and normal, but the edges are all warped.
The auto turn off feature totally sucks. Each time you turn on the camera, all the setting go back to Wide and anything else you changed goes back to reset.
I turned that off, and life is way better.
The battery lasted longer than I expected. Plus I finally got a second one, so it's okay.
Overall, I am really happy with the camera.

The biggest problem that I ran into is trying to get an extra battery for the camera. Of course Amazon gets items listed that companies say will work and so Amazon links it to the camera.
I ordered a battery and charger for pretty cheap, I knew it was cheap and didn't expect a great and powerful battery, but I was not expecting it NOT to fit. This Battery does not fit.

The company that was selling the battery offered me a second one to fix the problem. I certainly took them up on it and noticed some other guy had the same problem that I had. Amazon notices I contacted the seller and asks me to write a review of the company.
I had already written a review on the battery and basically just said the 3rd party company is screwing everyone up.
So, I write a pretty good review of the company. I said that the company did what they could to take care of me. I had already waited 2 weeks for a battery that fit and it didn't. Luckily I did not have a big trip planned where I KNEW I needed that 2nd battery.
I mentioned that sadly the company that made the batteries was messing them up.

Then I get a phone call. I hadn't gotten around the sending the batteries back for a refund; I was busy teaching summer school. I was okay with the phone call to help me take care of the problem. At this point I had ordered the expensive Ricoh battery to make sure it fit in my camera.

But Rep for the camera company was like - Take down your review and I'll give you your money back. WHAT??? It was a good review of YOUR company, but that doesn't matter because it wasn't 5 stars. Then, East Photo, called me again because I had not had a chance to go online and take down my review of their company. She was all, "We refunded your money, why haven't you done it.
Well half of it - I hope the charger I got works?? Little nervous there - trying a 3rd party charger feels weird after the battery fiasco.

Sooooooooooooo, long story short - HA - I took down my Amazon review of the company and said fine, be whiny - I'll just say how annoying you were on my BLOG. You can't make me take this down. I know not too many people see this, but it's still on the internet. I think it is pretty crappy to tell someone I'll refund your money if you take down the review. I call BS!!!!! Complete BS!!!

Anyway- Happy summer. It's August and school starts here next week. Can you believe that?
Go check out my videos on Youtube - and I'll see you around.
I was thinking about it today and realized that yes, I feel like I am writing about the same old thing all the time. So, I just haven't written a blog in a long time.

This spring was a little crazy. The weather would not get it together for March and April, so our normal weekend on the water got pushed back to MAY. Plus our vacation to Florida also got squeezed in there.

It's already June and much has happened in the last couple months.

D came for Easter and we hit Shanty Hollow lake; because of all the rain, the Barren River was way too high and not safe to be on. That was a lovely day, the sun was out. We hiked to the waterfall. I'll look for a picture.

We managed to get on the water a couple times in April. The creeks were all up a bit which made it pretty fun.

I got more hours at my mall job. The assistant manager quit, so we had a lot of hours to spread around to everyone else. I was working 6 days a week, between school and the mall. I was ready for our vacation in May.

Tom and I took off to Florida.
We had a great time stopping to see John and Missy in Alabama. It really helped break up the drive going to and from. We took the boats this time and managed to go Kayaking a couple times - in between Universal Studios days. That was awesome.
We did the big tour and saw the space shuttle launch pads and the giant mover. Space X has already taken over one of the launch pads and other companies have taken some of the other old spots on the grounds.
Seeing Space Shuttle Atlantis was the BEST thing ever. I always wanted to see one and it was even better than expected.
I just don't think most of them got much out of it. I was amazed at the amount of real things we created in the 60's. There were so many things I did not know.
I think the reason we stopped liking space so much was the extended time between the moon missions and the Space Shuttle launches. It took 12 years. The entire 70's went by and the only thing that we sent up were satellites. Sure those made a big difference in our television watching, but it did not create the buzz that a people'd launch did.

One last thing....
You all know that I really enjoy giving back in one way or another. Guess it's one reason I became a teacher. Anyway, we try to support things going on around us. This past weekend was one of those situations.
A group called "Kids on the Block" does puppet shows in schools to help students learn how to talk about things happening at home or school that they just can't figure out how to tell someone. Sure you may hear people say, "tell me if someone touches you", but get mad every time your kid says, "So and SO is touching me." So in that all important time to hear them goes by because you aren't listening.
Anyway, one of the supporters of the group wanted a fund raiser that got kids outdoors and wasn't just another color run. The owner of Lost River Pizza knows our Kayaking friend Tangie. She owns Green River Scrubs. She asked us to help with a paddle on the Barren River. A group of us went to make sure all the newbies made it through the trip in one piece.
The Local newspaper did a story on the trip and took a few pictures. They got my backside and a picture of one of the guys that does the stand-up board.

It was a rather slow paddle for us and some people were having a hard time going slow, but overall, it looked like everyone had a good time. A group of us met at Lost River pizza afterward and had a rather good time. The shirts are very comfortable and the gift bags had some cool stuff in them. I'm glad I could help out and have a great time doing it.

PS. Please let me know if you do want more of the paddling stuff. I have links to adventures I have made. Most of this stuff shows up on Facebook, so I don't post on here as much. If you like stories of the trips let me know, those certainly would go here better......Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044870713835293900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7409528.post-13434596326738686492015-03-02T19:27:00.000-06:002015-03-02T19:27:32.222-06:00We were on TV!!!
It has been 3 months since my last confession, please forgive me. How many posts will it take for you to forgive me?

I just realized that the last time I posted it was July. It's now October. Shame on me.
The trip at the beginning of August was out to Proud lake to stay in the cabins and go kayaking on the Huron River was fabulous.
I'm glad that a few people were able to come hang out with us. It was a great weekend.
You should be able to click on the pictures to make them "embiggen".
I have to say that was a fabulous weekend.
Tom is learning to cook with a dutch oven. He enjoyed that a great deal.
The cabin is rather comfy and just one of the nicest places to hang out with friends.
I think we will try to do it again next year, so put it on your calendar folks. The first weekend in August- Sunday afternoon.

I have tons more photos and other things to write about. I promise to try and keep up a little better.

Wow, it's October. Halloween is almost upon us. I need to find some stuff to decorate. Where is that box hiding????Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044870713835293900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7409528.post-72076467048532267982014-07-14T13:15:00.001-05:002014-07-14T13:15:35.765-05:00Two months Wrap up..... whew SorryShame on Me!!! It's been since MAY that I posted. I apologize.

Let's wrap up what happened between then and now....
May- One trip on the Green River- lovely part of 300 springs section with cool waterfalls. Pictures - http://www.meetup.com/paddling-51/photos/22104752/
Cook out with Bowling Green Canoe and Kayak meetup group. We were so busy eating I don't think anyone took pictures.. lol

Saw Addams Family at SkyPac. Went to a Retirement party for someone we Kayak with.
Then tried to get ready for New Orleans.
The end of May got really messy and the first week of June was terrible.

I guess I'm not really ready to write about that yet. You'd think I could and yet it doesn't want to come out.

June got better starting Saturday, June 7th. We left mom here at the house and left for the south. It was wonderful to spend some time with our friends in Alabama. We talked about life and what to do in New Orleans. I was very saddened that they could not come spend a day or 2 with us in the City. But, life happens to everyone.

We actually got to New Orleans on Sunday the 8th and managed to have the best dinner in a long time at a nice restaurant in the French Quarter, down past the out door market. We tried everything. Shrimp something, Gumbo, Fried Chicken and I can't even remember what I had. Their bread pudding was to die for - that much I remember. They gave us so much fried chicken that we had them box it and gave it to homeless people on our way back to the condo.
Monday was the WWII museum and it was worth every penny and more. The cafe was fabulous!! The 4D movie was even better. Plan for ALLLLL day. Really, it will take you all day.
Tuesday was the zoo. YES!!
It was a nice zoo, not too big, but not that small. They are rebuilding the Elephant Habitat so they are not on view all the time. Two old girls who were happy to get some attention.
It rained on us some and we rode the St. Charles Street Car from one end to the other. That was fun. Later that evening we went for a pedal cab tour of the French Quarter, it was great. The sun had set so it was getting cooler and we did not have to squint to enjoy the view.
Wednesday, we went to the Aquarium and enjoyed the day indoors. It was a bit hot. LOL.

On Thursday, we rode the Canal streetcar from one end to the other in order to see the Cemeteries. It was fun and beyond hot, we forgot to bring water bottles and basically paid for that. Hats were the saving grace of that day.

On Friday we drove all the way Home. It was long and mostly boring. I can not believe how much of NOTHING there was on the drive through Mississippi. I think we saw one town, the whole drive.
Saturday, I dragged myself out of bed and headed out to Kayak with our group.

There was NEW water scheduled and I was not going to miss out. Turns out it was about 14 -17 miles. The distance changes every time someone talks about that trip. It was a lovely day and it DID take forever, but we did have a good time. First trip I have gone on where I had cell service the whole time. I almost had a heart attack when the phone rang. pictures - http://www.meetup.com/paddling-51/photos/22554222/

Class started in late June and I am happy to say most of my students are kicking butt and will probably finish.
We then did the Green River again through Mammoth Cave park and had a cookout at the cabin afterward. The coolest part about that whole trip - is- WE are going to be on TV. PBS came to do a show about the Green river and us crazy folk who go on it all the time. I did get interviewed and Hubby managed to act a fool at one point, so I figured there will be video of us in the show. It sounds like the show will air in September. pictures - http://www.meetup.com/paddling-51/photos/22859922/

I went looking for information and it's not out there yet.

July came on us really quickly!!!! We drove home to Michigan for my birthday and the 4th of July. What a busy weekend that became. It was wonderful to see everyone.
We drove a little less this trip - thanks everyone - and survived. LOL

This past weekend we were in Tennessee to kayak the Caney Fork River and stay at Long Branch Campground. It's right below the dam that starts the river and WOW, the temperature drops quick and nice at night so you don't die in a tent. The river is filled with fish, clear to look through and down right COLD..
I will return to paddle this river again. Can't wait to go back!!!
Here is the link to the Caney Fork trip - http://www.meetup.com/paddling-51/photos/23146852/

This is usually not any kind of big deal, my hair grows fast and so the grey is starting to peek out a little sooner. Actually most of the time I wish it was the grey, it's the weird brown that looks terrible under everything else.

This time, as most of you have seen on Facebook, I'm finally back to the COPPER and Blond stripes that I had before I moved down here. It took an entire year to get this color back. Why did it take that long??

It seems that I must chalk it up to "chicken hair dresser" or "hair stylist", which ever you prefer.
Back last year we started with the exact same color I used in Michigan. I was flabbergasted that it did not work. It came out brown. Why?? The only thing we can guess is the CITY water in Royal Oak (Detroit water) has different chemicals in it than the water here in Bowling Green. Hence the problem.

I let her experiment with some other stuff a couple times and then the kicker. The last time she did my hair, they had found a Copper color and she had the nerve to put - neutralizer in it. Really, really??? Neutralizer, you saw the color of my hair the first time, it was crazy copper. For some reason you thought I would freak out? Am I really that old?? Do I look that cranky???

It's HAIR, I have been doing crazy (although not as much as others) stuff to my hair since I was a kid. Heck, I even got perms in the 80's - don't judge. It grows really fast (as long as it is short) and ta-da, if I don't like it today - give it three weeks and it will change.

Anyway - I now have Copper and of course it will fade to brown, but that's the whole point. You are shiny and crazy for a couple weeks and then become a normal person again. I guess this is how I stay out of the Tattoo shops. Needles---- {quiver}

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044870713835293900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7409528.post-14794292448085777102014-05-04T21:08:00.000-05:002014-05-04T21:08:33.031-05:00Kayamping in Kentucky.....The title really doesn't express the true BIGNESS of this experience.

The last weekend in April, we did an overnight Kayak trip in Mammoth Cave National Park.
It was our longest paddle to date - 20 miles Saturday and 11 on Sunday.

You may ask, "Who in the world are you doing all this crazy stuff with...?"
I have to tell you, it's a group of people we met through Meetup.com - Bowling Green Canoe and Kayak group.
This particular group has been around for a while now. The website says it was founded back in 2008. There is a pretty good group of hard core paddlers, who try to go out almost every weekend, or at least the 2 x's a month as scheduled . I've sort of wormed my way into the group. Hey, if you show up, you belong.

Being the person voted most likely to - bring tooooo much stuff - it was very interesting trying to pack for this trip.
I spent several days organizing all the stuff we really needed and then the stuff we were bringing to share in food. I thought I did an impressive job of bringing the least amount of stuff possible, but more than what I needed. I did need my jacket, that I almost left behind. I also could have used a sheet or something - my sleeping bag was not quite right for the bum I was trying to squeeze into it. I wiggled around enough to finally get the important bits warm and Hubby fit in his fine (except for his feet (of Course)) and we did get a bit of sleep.

Thanks to my brother for the tent and little air mattress. Hope you weren't planning on getting that back any time soon. I found an air mattress thing for Tom (on sale) and we got back-packer sleeping bags.

We have accumulated a few dry bags now and thank goodness. I spent an evening packing and repacking to fit everything the best I could. Funny thing is- we almost forgot to cook the bacon before we left. That would have taken FOREVER to do in the woods. We got it done and packed for the trip in record time.

In actuality, Hubby and I had a LOT more room to take stuff than we needed. The loaded down cooler was really the only thing that put his boat at a feeling of tipsy. I had plenty more room behind me in my boat and I know we did not over stuff his boat; I'm thinking of getting a camp table or tiny camp chairs. Our boat seats are the camp chairs, but getting up and down is a little rough.

15 people went and we did have an excellent time. And Hubby was the only person who wound up IN the water. And that was saving someone else's gear. It was warm enough that he dried out and didn't suffer from the quick rinse.

We have officially lived in Kentucky for One whole year.
I'll admit that looking back, it has been rather exciting - doing all these new things and trying to make friends here and connect with the ones back in Michigan.

New experiences - Caves. I love the BIG caves with the tours and all the campy stuff associated. I haven't really gotten Tom too interested, but Mom and I did a good job of hitting most of them when her and I came down by ourselves. I love going to Fundraisers at the Lost River Cave. It feels a bit glamorous.

Kayaking - sure we paddled in Michigan and did White Water in West Virginia, but I have to tell you - it is very different looking at the blue holes, and the hill sides, and the caves, and the cow farms. We upgraded our Kayaks and built a darn trailer to haul all our stuff around. I'd say we went from occasional water folk, to full on outdoorsy even..
I can not wait for the over night trip in Mammoth Cave Park on the Green River.

Community College - I LOVE IT. I really enjoy working there. The students are fascinating and the people I work with are really great. I look forward to continuing to work there. (I have a fall schedule already. :~)

It's a College Town - Okay, we don't go downtown where the kids hang out. But once in a while we go somewhere and it is VERY obvious that we live in a town with a TON of 20 somethings. It helps me feel young. HA

The weather - I should not brag. We moved down here the right year.... I'm sorry all my Michigan friends and family- You can keep all that snow....

Friends coming here to visit. That means YOU!!!!!
We have had a great time having visitors. You are welcome to visit. We might even take you Kayaking. LOL

It has been an interesting year. I'm so glad we took this chance and tried living somewhere new. Life is too short to sit in one place for too long. For all the faults you could find here, there are plenty going on in Michigan too. Just need to take where you are and work with it. I am working this place as well as I can.!!!

I think the Dogs like it here too. LOL
Hugs, I miss you all.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044870713835293900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7409528.post-2318684471219712782014-04-11T10:41:00.000-05:002014-04-11T10:41:34.906-05:00Kayaking in The Nashville areaI stumbled across the Nashville website through the Jackson Kayak blogs.
I was looking at stuff about taking your dog with you...

ANYWAY- I found this.......

Water Access and Blueways in Nashville.

Tomorrow, Tom and I (and the Bowling Green Canoe and Kayak Meetup Group) are going out on the Harpeth River in Tennessee.
It's about an 1 hour & 45 minutes away. I'm not sure we are going to the put in and take out that are listed on the website above, but I would hazard a guess it will be close to there either way.

I wanted to put that Link on my blog so that I could find it later.......
I'll probably put up pictures from the trip soon, and well - Sunday is our 10th Anniversary.
Oh MY!!!!

Enjoy your weekend, I certainly will.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044870713835293900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7409528.post-74789062907420194842014-03-21T07:57:00.000-05:002014-03-21T07:57:26.340-05:00Kindergartners.......

One of my friends found this on their Facebook wall and shared it and now I want to share it with you.

The common core is really kind of Ugly for most of the disciplines. I found the English in High School not too terrible, because they are supposed to have learned how to do most things before they get to me.

But I have seen some of the math stuff and it is rediculus. I can't even figure out what the kids are supposed to do. And now this is what they are doing to kindergartners, come on people. I know most of them can work a TABLET better than I probably ever will, but this is a computer with no real touch ability, they don't know this.

Please cut and paste this to share. A Kindergarten teachers just shared this on the BATs wall -

"I'm aiming for the short version here.

My kindergartners had their standardized computerized test today.

There were over 100 questions. Answers were selected by drop and drag with a trackpad, no mouse is available. One class took five hours to finish. Kids crying in 4 of 5 classes. Multiple computer crashes ("okay, you just sit right there while we fix it! Don't talk to anyone!"). Kids sitting for half hour with volume off on headsets but not saying anything. Kids accidentally swapping tangled headsets and not even noticing what they heard had nothing to do with what they saw on the screen. Kids having to solve 8+6 when the answer choices are 0-9 and having to DRAG AND DROP first a 1 then a 4 to form a 14. Some questions where it was only necessary to click an answer but the objects were movable (for no reason). No verbal explanation that you must click the little speaker square to hear the instructions. To go to the next question, one clicks "next" in lower right-hand corner.....which is also where the pop-up menu comes up to take you to other programs or shut down, so about many shut-downs or kids winding up in a completely different program.

If this is not what you want for your kids and grand-kids, you'd better start making some noise. Ten years ago we would've thought this would be literally impossible."

The weather was pretty fabulous on February 22, so we took the new boats out on a lake.
We were supposed to go on the Barren River, but it wound up being a bit too dangerous and we moved it to this lake.
Shanty Hollow Lake, which is a filled up hollow. There is an old cabin on the hill across the way from the boat ramp - which probably was a real road at one time.
The lake has a BIG berm on one end and a spillway to the creek below. I haven't been here before to say if the water level was really high or not.

All I can say is that the spillway box had a good couple feet up to go from the lake level. There was a big square in the top to help keep the lake from getting too high.

Tom and I wound up pretty far back from the pack. It was okay, we hadn't been here before, so we enjoyed wandering. They hiked up to a waterfall, that we'll have to go back and investigate. We didn't have proper shoes for that walk.
Anyway - here are our matching color kayaks. An Ibis for me and a Coosa for Tom.
I love the idea, wish it went a little farther, but hey it's a first step.

No, what I have here is the new rules of time working for Adjunct teachers at Community Colleges and Universities. The schools have been slashing the number of classes anyone Part Time can teach because they were all afraid that the government would say- "Hey, they are working full time, you have to give them benefits."
Well, as a teacher of course I want that to happen, BUT, I am realistic and understand that if you are not full time at a school - you are not likely to get Health Benefits.

Feel free to read the new rules......
New Rules for Adjunct Teachers.

What I like about the new rules is that I may just be able to teach another class each semester and not go over the 30 hours a week rule.
The Federal Government final came up with guidelines to figure out how many hours we really are teaching and spending on grading and lesson plans. I get that- as a teacher you are working more than just the time you are in the classroom with the students.
If you look at most English Professors, they spend lots of time reading your papers.
(Currently, it's my job to make sure you don't make your professor cry when they read your first paper.)
(Although, if they read my blogs- they might cry anyway.)

The current rules in Kentucky at the system I work for is that you can only teach 3 classes a semester and only so many credits a year. With the new rules, I am only putting in about 18-20 hours a week on those 3 classes. Which leaves 10 more hours to mess with.

Anyway, I don't know how long it will be before the new rules actually trickle down to the rest of us.
The big wigs need to make up their minds about if they are going to change their policies to give us some more classes.

Hope it's sooner rather than 2 years from now.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044870713835293900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7409528.post-19756771045125002582014-01-24T14:22:00.002-06:002014-01-24T14:22:28.791-06:00Heat Pump???News from Kentucky......

My mother keeps scolding me for actually mentioning that it is COLD here in Kentucky. Yes, the average temp has been in the 20's and below for 4 days and yes every time the Polar Vortex decides to descend from Canada into Michigan all the weather you would have gotten comes here.......

The problem is - Kentucky is really not set up for this kind of weather.
Did you know there are a lot of hills here??? Ice + Hills = Never a good driving scenario.
They do not have snow plows - here in Bowling Green we haven't gotten much snow, but some of the state has been hammered.
Almost everything here runs on Electricity. THAT totally sucks, they are having issues like you would in the summer - asking us to actually turn our thermostats down to 60 degrees- YES THEY REALLY DID THAT.

Which leads us to the real problem of the day....
Did you know that more houses have HEAT PUMPS and not actual Furnaces?????

Now, I have gotten a major lesson in how those suckers work this week. (Especially since we got our December electric bill at the same time as the Polar Vortex came to visit.)

Here in Kentucky the standard temperature right now should be between 35-50 degrees.
At that temp, the Heap Pump does okay. It might have to turn on the extra heating strips a couple times to help pump up the house. But did you know that they never really send HOT air into the house? At most it is exactly the temperature or sort of that you need to keep the house around 67-70 (or whatever you love to keep it at.)

Heat pumps work better in the summer. I read a page where the Heating/Cooling guy said that if you made the Heap pump big enough for a northern winter, it would be SOOOO big that your house would be an igloo in the summer.. (I'm adding emphasis here....)
So, they add these weird heat strips in the house (under my house) in the ducts to help keep the house a normal temp so the pipes don't freeze.

So, we hear the outside pump, right outside our bedroom that runs almost constantly - to keep it from getting frost all up and down the inside of it. Then the heat strips come on to actually heat the air for the house.
For anyone who has ever burnt their feet on a register in the winter waiting for the Furnace to heat up a house, you understand how VERY sad it is to not feel anything come out of the registers here.
(I noticed the same lack of cold force in the summer too.)

I am betting that our Electric bill for January (comes late Feb) will be 3 to 4x's what we paid in November. I'm disturbed by the amount we are paying for December and we weren't here for 2 weeks.

So, here is the cautionary tale - Heat pumps can be much cheaper to run in warmer climates, but woe- is- me to the people in Michigan or North East who have one. Hope they all have fire places - which we also do not have..... But that is a whole other post...

Stay Toasty my friends, Stay Toasty.....

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044870713835293900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7409528.post-16440595378464327742014-01-22T20:58:00.000-06:002014-01-22T20:58:11.423-06:00We laughed, we cried, we spent too much money.....I haven't done a movie review in FOREVER....

Most recent-
Frozen -
I was going to skip this one. Then news started floating around Facebook of the awesome music that fills this movie and the newer life choices for Disney Princesses. Awesome. I tracked it down, I even went out of my way to find the movie. I managed to drag Tom and we both thought it was great. It's been out since before Christmas and it's now middle of January and the movie theater was half FULL on a Thursday night. No Kidding. Sure there was a couple noisy kids, but heck it is a kids movie. Great Music.

Catching Fire (No. 2 of Hunger Games)
Loved it!!! Thought they did an even better job with this movie. It moved you along quickly enough and had plenty of suspense without bogging you down for hours in the GAME itself. I had completely forgotten how that book had ended and the movie took me right there. I have high hopes for movie number 3.

The Desolation of Smaug (or Hobbit 2- as it is otherwise known..)
Some people I talked to loved it. I thought it was alright. I didn't feel that they had as good of music in this one. There was no Dwarf awesome song in this one. The whole bit between Smaug and Bilbo was cool, but you know it was rather predictable even for me - and I have to admit I never read the books. (None of them- I know - I'm a pathetic fantasy reader.) We did not see it in 3D, maybe that helped bring Smaug more to giant size life. I don't really like the OVERLY shaky camera work anyway. I forget that I feel a little sea sick after watching his films. All that crane camera work from long weird angles spinning around people and up into the air - it all just makes me feel like I'm on a roller coaster. I am sure that is his main reason for doing it, to make you feel like you are right there riding the rapids in a barrel with them.

I can't think of what else we have gone to see.
I can tell you that we miss going with friends to the movies. Getting to talk about and tear them apart with other people is really a lot of fun.
Which is why- I was thrilled that while the Dinosaur was here in Kentucky we watched the Hunger Games with her and her family. It really is a good movie.
Oh my Goodness - I totally forgot about Despicable Me 2- Okay it came out last summer. But I bought the Blue-Ray copy for Christmas. It came with 3 mini-movies about the minions that Newbie directors got to make using all the cool gear they were using to make the big movie. They were able to use already created characters and backgrounds in order to really get to the heart of a short story. In animation the ground up phase of creating characters is always the hardest. So, to be able to use the WORLD that was already up and running, really made it easier for the new directors to really get right to the point. They were great little movies and I hope those new Directors get noticed because of them. :~)

Sometimes when you are trying to build a house, or a road, or put in the sewer and electric for these things - they actually need to BLAST to get past some rock.

Today, I experienced this happening in my NEIGHBORHOOD!!! Like 20 minutes ago.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I know I saw the sign last week at the front entrance to the sub. (Lucky I went out that day?)

But, to be standing in the back yard with the dogs, and hear what sounds like a weird car alarm, or police alarm or anything like that- and then BOOM!

I won't say the world rocked, but I'm sure the dogs felt it more than I did.
It took me a second to realize what they had done and I'm sure that it was pretty darn small, I didn't see any dirt fly in the air or anything. (Actually, I'm not even sure I was facing the right direction- they are building in two different directions from my house.)

So, I share my discombobulation over this experience.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044870713835293900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7409528.post-82371638151188414872014-01-15T14:32:00.001-06:002014-01-15T14:32:51.605-06:00New YearIt's 1/2 way through January and how many people have already blown their New Years Resolutions??
I purposely did not make any.

Sure I have things I need to do this New Year, but I wasn't going to make a big nasty fuss.

Currently, keeping my new students on track and actually being able to do their work is keeping me plenty busy.

Usually it's Black board or the weird company we use - their software that freaks out. Nope - it's the IntrAnet the college uses that is down or not working right.

Luckily I'm willing to go around most of these issues to get work done!!

I'm currently well on my way to getting my second major idea accomplished. I am planning to hit the rivers a Lot this year. I've gone on two kayaking trips already with hubby's kayak and found the one I want to buy.

We had to get a trailer, and put that together. I have to finish the lights on the trailer and get the plug put in my car. I was told Uhaul is my best bet for not spending a million bucks. That's tomorrow's plan.

I found the coolest boat for myself. It's called the Ibis by Jackson Kayak- all American made!!! It doesn't weigh a ton and it moves through the water nice and can carry all my crap for an over night trip.

It is sort of in between white water kayaks and sit on tops. The cockpit is huge and the seat is removable and comfy. :-).

I'll post pictures once I get mine. I need to take a better picture of Toms big fishing rig. He wanted a sit on top that was beyond stable. Yup- it is just too heavy for me to carry. (Or drag).

Hope to take brando out with it. He loves the water. :-).

Have a fabulous day. (And what day is it??). Hump day.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044870713835293900noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7409528.post-78121857195305050312013-12-13T16:15:00.000-06:002013-12-13T16:15:17.949-06:00Holiday MadnessThe Holidays are upon us and it feels different this year.

I would guess that the temperature being above 30 degrees at some point each day can certainly change someones outlook on everything. It is currently 43 degrees here and 29 degrees in Michigan. This can explain my little extra enjoyment of the days.

I also, can not really do any Christmas shopping yet for many of the people that I get stuff for.
First- half the stores I like are not in this town.
Second- why drag it across 4 states to get it to people.
Third- It doesn't feel like I have any money to spend on people anyway.

This brings me to the silly list of things we really need to do or get while in Michigan.
I want the nice LED down lights from Costco to replace the dead ones in this house. They don't get all hot and Costco has the best prices. There are 12, (I don't need 12) not including the weird lights in the bathrooms, but those take regular bulbs.
Tom needs a new Winter coat. The 0 degree coat we left at his parents is a little over kill for the 4 hours of 32 degrees or less one runs into here in the morning or late night. My coat is a little bulky looking for here, but does the trick nicely and 1/2 way through the day I just toss it in the car. Everyone laughed at the Fleece coats we bought in the spring. Wear it ALL the time.
Oh yeah, Tom has started craving Polish Sausage from Milford Meats. That is on the list of dinners he plans to make. We both want Chinese FOOD. There are a couple Chinese Buffets here, they just do NOT do any justice to the food. I see a trip to Lei Ting in Milford on our list of places to hit. We'd meet people at the red door (something Gardens) on 5 mile, but Ted and Amy aren't around to meet there. We miss them.
I have to admit - Tom said we need to hit a Coney island. They just don't have anything like it here. He wants simple fish and chips. Sure, we have Long John Silvers and Captain D's here- but that's Greasy Chicken and fish - not the same.
I would love to have some GOOD Greek food, Mediterranean, - LAMB. The ONE place here is not so great and no one eats Lamb here, soooo, She never makes the lamb dishes. The problem is the last four restaurants we liked in Greek town are gone. Pegasus is always too busy and crowded, and it's not the same. The don't make the "stolen lamb" recipe. Boo!!!!! Where, oh where, can we get good Greek food now?
Well, hope we can see you while we are in town. Hit up our Cell phones.

Oh, you ask about the dogs. Why, yes - they are a joy and a pain. Cody's back just got so yucky that we finally took him in for surgery. They sent some tissue off for study and it came back as a skin cancer. Plus - the area was NOT healing. It was gross on so many levels. So, they went in again, dug out more and this time sewed it up with big stitches. Tada! - it has healed and they took the stitches out today.

That's the current catch up. See you soon.....
He tosses it around and acts all cute. I throw it at least once or twice. He comes over and bats it past me. I notice him digging behind me in the curtains.

I turn around to help him find it, as Cody gets up and wanders away.

Brando and I look around for a few more minutes. Then Brando gives up and wanders away.

I go back to what I'm doing.

About a minute later Cody shows up at the door of my room looking in with the missing ball hanging out the side of his mouth. He'd snatched it up while Brando was distracted with me.

Of course Cody knew he was being sneaky. LOL.

I had to chase him to the living room where puppy play ensued.

Just goes to show you.
